Confession XII: Jill Roy

Jill Roy is what many women aspire to be. Mother of three beautiful children and founder of the very successful full service production company 3 star productions. The climb to success was not easy, but definitely worth every step. The Confessionals caught up with the busy Roy on one of her frequent trips to NY, and got to know the woman behind the machine.

What lead you to Los Angeles from Tennessee?

I was married to photographer Norman Jean Roy, and we came out to LA since his photography career was on the rise.

Were you ever a part of his projects?

That’s how I got my start in producing. I was producing his photo shoots, and truly had my hands on in every aspect. From the casting, and location and booking the talent, that experience was a great starting point early on in my career.

How did 3 star productions come to be?

I started producing when I was in LA first for my husbands shoots at the time, then from word of mouth one project lead to another, and another. Eventually I found myself producing 5 shoots as a one woman show, and slowly I grew. Now we have grown to a full service production company in LA and New York, from still photography to moving picture production. We do every aspect of production down to budgets and scouting locations.

What is it like to be a mom and have time to do what you do?

Well at first it was a bit hard because everything was happening at the same time with the kids growing up and starting school, while projects were coming through at the same time. I found myself juggling a lot, but you get used to it and it becomes part of your lifestyle, and you find yourself turning into a sort of superhero that somehow does it all. I guess what I’m trying to say, as cliché as it might sound, is nothing is impossible when you work hard and put your mind to it.

Who are your clients?

Wow, there’s a lot to name but 5 off the top of my head, we work with Vogue, W, GQ, Dolce & Gabbana, L’Oreal, Target and Sony. As well as a slew of photographers we work with including, Norman Jean Roy, Jack Guy, Steven Klein, and Sheryl Nields to name a few.

Who have you worked with that really was a trip?

So many I loved working with, but I can definitely say Quentin Tarantino was a lot of fun and a ball of energy.

Confession XI: Cameron Silver

The marvel of vintage couture is none other than the esteemed Cameron Silver. Silver is the founder of the fashion staple Decades on Melrose with its modern sister Decades 2 right next door. Silver invited The Confessionals for a private look at his new treasures, and his newly launched denim line, Decades Denim.

How did your love of vintage commence?

I was recycling clothes in the mid 90s before it was even a trendy thing to do. I would go thrifting for men’s and women’s wear, just for fun. I loved the history behind clothes. Around 1995-97 it hadn’t even boomed yet. I had a good eye, and somehow I ended up educating most on how to thrift the proper way.

When did you open Decades?

I opened Decades about 13 years ago. I had collected so many clothes throughout the years. 2 years into it, I opened Decades 2 which my business partner Christos Garkinos runs.

When did you know you were successful at this?
Within the first 5 to 6 months of opening, stylists were calling for their celebrity clients.

How do you find your pieces?

Pieces are sent to me, I travel a lot, meet a lot of people, and I go to vintage auctions.

Are there any other locations?

Yes in London on Dover Street, and there is a pop up Decades 2 in NY.

Tell us about Decades denim that you recently launched

I’ve been wanting to for some time now. It will be the holiday collection and 125 to 500 stores will be carrying them. It will be premium denim, and it will retail for $99-$125. 11 styles, tuxedo jean, luxurious with a contemporary price point.

Boring food. I hate spices. My typical meal is grilled salmon, with some vegetables on the side.

I don’t like cars too much, not into showy cars

I don’t have any closet space.

5-Tell us something most don’t know about your background
I used to be a Cabaret singer. I would perform in small theaters from Seattle to Orlando.

6-What did you study in school?
I received my Bachelors in Theater and Costume Design from UCLA.

7- How is your house decorated?
I have a Schindler house, clean and simple, with contemporary art. Oh and one more thing you should know, there is a massive painting of myself in my entrance that a friend of mine painted for me….don’t ask.

This past month, The Confessionals were knee deep in the festivities of The La Cienega Design Quarter's "Celebrate Hollywood" event, sponsored by ELLE DECOR. The 2nd annual event commemorated interior and production design in Hollywood, along with a lineup of distinctive panels and presentations featuring leaders in fashion, design, and entertainment. Out of the 20 some panels, 2 particularly struck us as memorable moments within the design saturated weekend. Vintage Lineage, which took place at Lee Stanton Antiques, discussed classic designs with modern applications for the home, red carpet, and the runway. The notable panel was moderated by ELLE DECOR editor in chief, Margaret Russell, and included the likes of interior designer, Chris Barrett, fashion designer, Catherine Malandrino, and Decades founder Cameron Silver.

Following Vintage Lineage, Catherine Malandrino gave us a sneak peek of her newest collection. The Confessionals captured moments of the LA Models girls strutting Catherine's latest summer trends.

Confession V: Merle Ginsberg

W Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Marie Claire, Harpers Bazaar, and Elle, have all had the luxury of being nourished by the words of prominent fashion writer Merle Ginsberg. Television is no stranger to her certain j'ne Sequa, as one of the last-standing contestants on Bravo’s popular show, “Launch my line,” and a judge on RuPaul’s “Drag Race.” Currently as Editor-in-Chief of the highly acclaimed style site, Fashionrules.com, Merle is taking on a variety of platforms, and took the time to fill The Confessionals in, on her past, present and future.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Philadelphia, but grew up in Margate, New Jersey, because my dad ran hotels. It's near Atlantic City, so we lived right near the beach. When I was 15 we moved to upstate New York, Liberty NY, and I lived there till my parents decided to move to Miami. I spent a few summers in Miami while I was going to college at Cornell in Ithaca NY, but I didn't like it. I moved to New York City right after I graduated college. It's been all NYC and LA ever since.

Who has been your biggest fashion influence?

It started with pop and rock stars like Chrissie Hynde, and even Janis Joplin from seeing the "Woodstock" movies. Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane. The Beatles and their women. And then, it morphed into literary heroines like Anais Nin and Colette and Edith Wharton and Virginia Wolf and the Bloomsbury Group. Anyone I ever saw in a Ken Russell movie (like "Women in Love" and "The Rainbow") inspired my sense of fashion - I love looking at very individualistic artistic women, and how they express themselves through clothes. I really love the ladies who broke all the rules, Coco Chanel, Audrey and Katherine Hepburn. I'm inspired by Yohji and Commes des Garcons and Marni and Dries van Noten - but more their work than their lives. They make exotic clothes but live quiet lives. Why not both???

Someone you have met or written about that made your knees go weak

Hmmm - that doesn't happen very often. You are probably asking what CELEBS make my knees go weak (Tim is in a ton of tv and movies, fyi). Jeremy Irons. Daniel Day Lewis. Bono. I've interviewed them and they all make me melt, but Jon Stewart and Craig Ferguson also make me melt. I LOVE smart guys who make me laugh. Creativity is what gets me.

Why did you want to become a writer?

So many answers. I was living in Europe as a student, and I just felt the need to write about the experience. Writing has always calmed me down and made me feel saner and safer - not sure why. I guess I was very quiet and thinky as a kid, and writing allowed me to have a voice and be heard. What is more important in life than words and how you communicate? I was reading as a kid before I was watching tv. Words have enormous importance to me - because they are the carriers of our emotions, and unlock the mysteries - as much as they CAN be unlocked!

How did you get on Launch my Line, and how has the experience been?

I was called by a casting scout for Bravo and told they were interested in me. The casting people there set up an audition for me - which I thought I did a good job on, but got zero feedback. I was sure I would not be cast. About a month later, they asked me to write to them to describe the kind of line I would do. I gave it a lot of thought - the line you see on the show is exactly what I wrote up. A few weeks later, they hired me. We started about 3 weeks later - not much prep time.

What can we expect from you in the future?

That's a good question! I loved the line from the new movie "Invictus": "How can we exceed our own expectations?" More tv, more books, my blog Fashionrules.com, and hopefully, a clothing line, a line of undergarments with a great concept, a perfume, a novel, a comedy act - and that's just this year! I've got a lot of goals - let's see how much I can actually pull off. One thing you should not expect from me: Marriage.

Confession IV: Kelly Cutrone

The dark mistress of ceremonies, or shall we say the dark mistress of fashion, has ventured out into the literary world with her new book “If you have to cry go outside, and other things your mother never told you.” The Confessionals attended the Los Angeles book signing and left the evening with more than just a “Who do I make this out to?”.

For those who do not follow fashion, watch television, or aren’t well versed in the world of PR, then maybe Kelly Cutrone is not in your cultural vocabulary. For those of you who do, then you know that she is owner and founder of the successful fashion PR firm, Peoples Revolution, and has been regarded as the cuttingly honest publicist on The Hills. Currently, she stars on her own Bravo hit series, “Kell on Earth”. However there is more to this fashion maven than the public sees. Her recent book not only conveys her many transitions but lessons learned in life. She walks readers through with the highs and lows of what life has to offer, expresses how to be honest with not only oneself but with others, and how to climb to the top while experiencing the bottom on the journey. Throughout readers get an intimate perspective fused with spiritual enforcement, as well as mentionings of her daughter Ava, a day in a life of a People’s Revolution employee, and the wild ride that is Kelly’s life.

The book signing took place at the Borders in Westwood. Kelly arrived in her signature all black attire, and despite her lack of color, was able to add a splash of pizzazz with her studded black cowboy boots. Kelly’s dear friend, Justine Bateman, was in the crowd supporting her best friend, as Kelly shared some photos from their glamazon days in NY when they were just a couple of young night kittens on the scenes prowl. She touched upon the book, and satisfied a lot of aspiring fashionistas in the audience with thought out and vulnerable answers to the countless questions they had, in place of a lack luster re-interpretation.

As we approached Kelly to sign our copy of her book, she asked “Who do I make it out to?” We then replied “The Confessionals.” She then graciously referred to us while she mentioned to her media crew, “This is why I love the girls who admire me…All Black clothes, and hair...Love you girls!” We were very flattered, went on to chat a bit, and posed for a picture, which, came out a “tad “ blurred. Ironically a publicist took the picture and so blatantly said “gorgeous,” even though you could barely see us. That’s a good publicist.

This evening brought on a new found appreciation for the mercurial, mystical, and inspiring wonder that is Kelly Cutrone on many levels. She is spiritual, profound, honest, and a Wolf mother that truly and honestly has her den’s interest at heart.

Confession III: Olivia Putman

Most of the world knows about the Empress of Interior Design, Andree Putman. The French born enigma brought her conceptual mind into the public’s eye, and transformed lifeless spaces into innovative masterpieces. Andree comes from an artist’s background , the daughter of a concert pianist, she was imbedded with art, music and culture from an early age. Andree attended France’s most prominent music conservatory, and became a well-trained musician. Her love of the arts and design led her to become the world’s most influential designer, decorating the interiors of such notables as YSL, Karl Lagerfeld, as well as France’s former minister of culture, and the Bordeux museum of contemporary art. Her firm, Agence Andree Putman, established in 1997, showcases everything from furniture, to flatware to sheets and even fragrance. Most however, are not aware that Olivia Putman, Andree’s daughter, has been groomed from a young age to take on her mother’s legacy.

The Confessionals recently sat down with Olivia. The Paris based designer filled us in on what it takes to follow in her mother’s footsteps, while supplementing her individual design identity.

How does it feel to take over the empire Andree has built?

It definitely is an empire of high quality, taste and design. I have a huge responsibility to take on, but I will definitely be putting my own personal taste, and thought in future projects.

How have you been preparing, and what have you been taught by Andree thus far?

I myself started off as a landscape designer. I would find abandoned buildings and transform them into artist’s studios and exhibition spaces. My educational background is in Art History, which has taught me to always open my eyes to new things, without forgetting what the past has left us with, and to always be aware of the importance of my surroundings.

How long have you been working with Andree?

Before I was a landscape artist, I was always following her around and being present during her projects, ever since I was a little girl.

What is the creative force behind your projects? Food? Fashion? Film? Etc…?

I have many interests, films, special movements in history, and even jewelry. Fashion not so much, only because I do not like being told what trend I should wear. If pink is the new trend, I may not want to wear pink, so I’d rather create my own personal style. I however love traveling, and I truly get inspiration from my surroundings, as well as people’s every day lives, their behaviors, to even imagining what their homes would look like.

What can we expect from you in the future?

At the agency, we are always coming up with new concepts. I am fond of new materials, new ideas, and have an open-minded approach. I love incorporating new technology, as well as new products and materials, new lighting, and even certain types of wood. People will be very impressed with our inventive approach with our future projects, for years over.

Confession II: Diane Pernet

Diane Pernet carries an intimidatingly dark and mysterious elegance. She intentionally fades into the black uniform of her signature dress although she is quite beautiful if one was lucky to see her partially unveiled. Diane’s voice is a soft whisper, her words bring light and reign truth to the amalgam of the fashion community’s visionaries, misfits, and promising talent. We first met Diane Pernet briefly three years ago at the Los Angeles premiere of her first fashion film festival, You Wear It Well. We were starving for a festival in LA to push boundaries in the most aesthetically beautiful of ways and that it was indeed. Three years later, on September 25-27^th 2009, she is projecting a new festival, A Shaded View On Fashion Film, in the most appropriate of cities, the city she has chosen to call home, the city of light, Paris, France. The incredible ensemble of contributors to this festival include: Erwin Olaf, Roísín Murphy, Fumiko Imano, Mr. Pearl, Benjamin Serroussi, Mattias Montero and Igor Zimmerman; as well as films by/with Steven Klein, Chloe Sevigny, Kim Gordon, Chris Cunningham, Ali Madhavi, Undercover - Jun Takahashi, Thom Browne, Jenny Lewis and Yelle. This year’s jury for the films in competition includes: designer Rick Owens, photographer Nan Goldin, actress Maria de Medeiros, curator Eric Troncy, journalist Laurent Goumarre, ad man Eric Tong Cuong and producer Hélène Ségol.

Diane, you are a mercurial creative wunderkind, successfully wearing various occupational ensembles. How did you live so many creative lives in one?

D: I don’t know, somehow it feels quite natural. I started out by studying film, then reportage photography, then went back to school for a short while to study fashion and set up my business without really having had any kind of apprenticeship. Professionally, I grew up in public. Journalism was not something that I ever planned, it just happened. After working as an editor for Elle.com and Vogueparis.com, blogging seemed quite natural. The position at ZOO Magazine as co-editor in chief really came out of the blogging even though I had been writing for them ever since the days of Dutch. Sandor Lubbe was the creative power behind Dutch and now ZOO. The film festival is something that evolved out of the fact that for the past 9 or more years I’ve been making low-fi videos. About 7 + years ago, I had thought about putting together a fashion film festival but at that time there really was really not enough interest or material out there. I launched A Shaded View On Fashion Film as an extension of my blog 2 years ago and prior to that I co-curated You Wear it Well, a fashion film festival that was really a 90 minute curated program consisting of about 30 short films. ASVOFF is a three day fashion film festival that incorporates documentaries, short and fiction films as well as music videos. As for the consulting and talent scout, the festival d’Hyeres talent scouting evolved from the fact that for the past 7 years I’ve been working with my team doing the making of videos of the festival and it just grew naturally. White Club in Milan came out of that.

Your personal style is dark, iconic, and strikingly beautiful. May you tell us more about this? Was there a point in your life that prompted you to project this individual style?

D: When I was a fashion designer for my own brand for 13 years. I took the decision to wear black in the same way that Givenchy or Maison Martin Margiela took to white lab coats. By dressing in a uniform you do not compete with what you create. I stopped designing long ago but kept to the uniform. It evolves with time but basically has become my signature.

What inspired you to first fuse the worlds of fashion and film when creating the You Wear It Well festivals and now ASVOFF (A Shaded View On Fashion Film) Festivals?

D: Fashion and Film are my two loves. When I was a child I dreamed of being a fashion designer but never felt confident in my drawing abilities. I studied film at University and fashion followed after that when I understood that although it is a great advantage if you can draw well, it is not required. I created mostly by draping on a live model then giving that to my patternmaker to clean up and make into the finished garment. She was also quite good at interpreting my spontaneous style of drawing. Film and fashion complete the circle that started out a long time ago. About 4 years ago when I told my LA contributor at that time that I had made a road movie for Eley Kishimoto he asked me if I wanted to screen it in LA. At the same time EGR, my Mexican contributor, sent me a film that he’d made. I liked it, posted it onto my blog, and we decided to create a fashion film festival. My original impulse for this was too soon but by 2006 the time was right.

Have there been any films or filmmakers that have inspired you throughout your life?

D: Absolutely, John Cassavetes, because I think that he changed the landscape of independent film, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Luis Bunel, Visconti, Pasolini, David Lynch, Almodovar, Atom Egoyan, Neil La Bute...many.

Upon first casually meeting you a few years ago, you were reminiscent of Maya Deren, a favorite filmmaker of ours who’s works were visionary and experimental for her time. The interests and the creative forces you promote and expose on your blog A Shaded View On Fashion are also ahead of their time or seen as “fringe“ in contrast to mainstream mass produced fashion lines. What has compelled you to continue to uncover these works and people?

D: It is just my natural instinct and what I am attracted to. BTW when I was in San Francisco four years ago at the DeYoung Museum I picked up a DVD of Maya Deren’s and I love it. I had been trying to find it here and could not but now it is easier to find.

We’ve noticed more design houses and designers extending beyond print and creating video campaigns. What do you believe is the sudden desire for this medium to translate their work?

D: I think that runway shows are feeling very last century and that film is the new medium for fashion. Frozen images can be beautiful but fashion in movement makes a lot of sense. Fashion films have created a whole new dimension for creative exploration.

We’d love for you to bring your festival to our hometown of L.A. and remove the candy-coated explosive induced aesthetic of the majority of mainstream American cinema. Do you plan on bringing ASVOFF to the United States?

D: We would love to bring it there but in order for that to happen we need a sponsor.

Do you believe “Paris is still burning?” when it comes to fashion and film or are there other countries we should open our eyes to?

D: While personally I feel that Paris will always be the center of fashion even though there are enormous amounts of creativity coming from London and elsewhere, Paris is the platform that gets designers from around the planet the most international attention. In that respect, Paris is still burning. I travel a lot and the whole idea behind www.ashadedviewonfashion.com and www.asvoff.com is that you do not need to come from one of the major capitals like LA, NYC, Paris, Milan, Tokyo, London, etc. but if you have something to say in our times through digital technology you can be heard. For example, I’ve found great filmmakers in places like Riga, Latvia and Stockholm.

Any advice you would like to give to future fashion film makers that would like to submit to ASVOFF?

D: It’s very open, I love the diversity in fashion and film. ASVOFF3 deadline is May 2010 and as LA is the capital of film, it would be great for them to have a strong representation in ASVOFF. It’s an open call and everyone is invited the only criteria is that the film, for the competition, be under 5 minutes and that within those 5 minutes fashion plays a major role.

Confession I: Mia Kirshner

This past Saturday The Confessionals attended the “I Live Here/ Malawi Prison Literacy Project Fundraiser event in Santa Monica, California, hosted by Mia Kirshner, Operation USA, Causecast, CODEPINK. Mia explained this evening that she serendipitously wasable to visit the Kachere juvenile prison after a failed attempt of trying to visit the adult prison.

Upon her visit she was taken a back in what she saw as typical living conditions the children were experiencing; from the smell of feces due to lack of toilets, plastic bags being used as plates, rooms crammed with overflowing people for sleeping quarters, no soap for more than a month resulting in rashes, children eating only one meal a day, to the invisible figures of teachers and utensils that could educate these children who all seemed eager to express themselves in a positive light despite their dismal life experience. Most of the children have lost their parents due to the prevalence of AIDS in Malawi, or are sick themselves with high rates of tuberculosis and AIDS amongst other near death illnesses. The majority of them have been incarcerated because of petty crimes such as stealing food due to the high rate of poverty.

We were able to have a quick conversation with Mia, and she was as graceful, honest, open, and passionate you could imagine one who would set such a project out to the world would be. We spoke of unheard voices in several cultures, many in which politics does not allow the world to see, and exchanged laughter about the humor of life bringing you into new great heights. We continued our evening through exploring an interactive multimedia experience in which she and volunteers for this benefit set up. Through several dark red-lit hallways there were visual elements of “I Live Here” pasted onto the walls in which people navigated with flashlights that were given to us. There was even a tent displayed in which a phonograph inside played an audio recording of Mia interviewing one of the prisoners in Malawi. We crouched down into it to listen and saw a box that had red booklets carefully constructed and tied with thread that explained the purpose and future of these anthologies. Mia mentioned earlier this evening that the most incredible statement was from a young boy she met in the juvenile prison in Malawi. She repeated it to us since it resonated so strongly within her. He said “ My goodness is my wisdom which is my strength and my future”. This evening truly shed light on the fact that through Mia’s vision along with the support of many advocates present to make this possible there will be a future for the children in Kachere prison. She has expressed before “that if you have a belief that something isn’t right, and you see it through in terms of the change that you want to see, you will see that change.” And indeed we will see change in Malawi along with the various other anthologies Mia intends to create with future travel.

There was an incredible turnout of generous people who bid on items during the auction, which in turn met the goal of making the Literacy Project an actual reality, as well as being able to donate items that these children needed to live in proper health conditions.

Other figures such as KCRW DJs Tom Schnabel and Nic Harcourt spun tunes through the night and even the likes of “L Word” co-star Rose Collins made an appearance on-stage to encourage higher bids during the auction that took place.
